Cystic Fibrosis Gala

This blog is really dedicated to design inspiration, but today I want to talk about something much more important.  This is the time of year that we are reminded to be thankful and also to give.  Last night, my husband and I attend the Cystic Fibrosis Gala at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.  We have known several people over our lives who have CF.  My dear friend, Alyssa Siler’s four year old daughter has CF. Alyssa is the current Mrs. Oklahoma.  Every chance we get we try to help her raise awareness and money for CF research.  The scientists are so close to finding a cure for this disease.

What is cystic fibrosis?

Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that causes mucus to build up and clog some of the organs in the body, particularly the lungs and pancreas. When mucus clogs the lungs, it can make breathing very difficult. The thick mucus also causes bacteria (or germs) to get stuck in the airways, which causes inflammation (or swelling) and infections that lead to lung damage.

Mucus also can block the digestive tract and pancreas. The mucus stops digestive enzymes from getting to the intestines. The body needs these enzymes to break down food, which provides important nutrients to help people grow and stay healthy. People with cystic fibrosis often need to replace these enzymes with medicine they take with their meals and snacks, which helps them digest food and get proper nutrition.

The Gala was extra-special this year because James Cameron and his wife, Suzy Cameron were the honorary chairs for the event. Suzy’s nephew has the disease.

It was a terrific event with an amazing turnout of people.  I know that there was a lot of money raised for CF!

Here I am with my friend Kelli at the gala.

Hope you are having a great weekend too!
